What does PPD mean in workers’ comp? (Permanent Partial Disability)
The acronym PPD stands for permanent partial disability. PPD benefits are one of three types of New Jersey workers’ compensation benefits payable to employees who are injured on the job or suffer from a workplace illness or occupational disease. Permanent partial disability benefits are paid when a worker’s injuries to one or more body parts or bodily systems prevent them from working. For example, you may receive PPD benefits if you lost your hand in an industrial accident.
Workers do not receive PPD benefits immediately. PPD benefits begin accruing once temporary total disability (TTD) benefits have ended or accrue from the date of accident if no TTD is paid. PPD benefits are either scheduled or non-scheduled. Scheduled PPD benefits are paid for the loss (or loss of function) of a scheduled body part or bodily system. For example, the following are all scheduled losses:
• Fingers
• Hands
• Toes
• Feet
• Arms
• Legs
• Eyes
• Ears
If a worker’s disability is related to any of these body parts, their benefits will depend on the affected body part and their percentage of disability. Non-scheduled PPD benefits are payable for workers whose injuries involve any other body part or bodily system not covered on the scheduled list.
