What does FCE mean under workers’ comp? (Functional Capacity Evaluation)

If you’re in the process of filing a workers’ compensation claim, you may have come across the acronym FCE. FCE stands for functional capacity evaluation, which is an objective examination used to determine your ability to perform certain tasks. The insurance company, your employer, or your attorney may request that you undergo an FCE.

During an FCE, you will be asked to do various things, such as walk, run, grab objects, lift objects over your head, climb or perform other tasks that you may perform on a regular day at your job. The evaluator, who is usually a physical or occupational therapist, will observe you performing these actions and assess your effort and ability.

In some ways, an FCE is similar to an independent medical evaluation (IME), although there are some important differences. In an IME, a doctor is asked to give their opinion about your condition and your ability to return to work. Necessarily, this involves the doctor’s personal opinion, making IMEs rather subjective. However, FCEs are more objective in nature, meaning that the evaluator is not asked to provide an opinion, only to report the extent of your abilities. The only subjectivity that can come into an FCE is if the evaluator determines that you are not providing a full effort. In such cases, the evaluator will note this in their report.

An FCE usually takes longer than an IME and requires more effort from you. FCEs can be incredibly important because they will help determine if you are able to return to work and, if so, in what capacity.
