Union Uber Accident Attorneys

Experienced Uber Accident Attorneys in Union, New Jersey Help Those Injured in Union County Crashes

The downtown area of Union Township, also known as Union Center, is home to just over 2,220 residents as of the 2020 US Census. Yet Union sees far more traffic than its residency numbers indicate. Union’s main street is Morris Avenue, aka New Jersey Route 82; the Garden State Parkway borders Union Center to the southeast.

For both residents and visitors, Union Center provides a small-town atmosphere with easy access to New Jersey and New York’s largest metropolitan areas. For many, calling an Uber offers an easy way to travel in and around Union.

Uber may be convenient, but it comes with risks. Like any road trip, an Uber ride can result in an accident. If you’re injured in a collision with an Uber, speak to an experienced Union Uber accident lawyer today. The team at the Todd J. Leonard Law Firm can help.

Uber Accident Statistics

Uber can feel like a safer way to travel. Passengers choosing Uber may do so because they prefer not to drive while intoxicated, sleepy, or unwell. They may be visitors to Union and fear navigating unfamiliar roads.

Some reasons to ride with Uber make sense. Yet the presence of Uber and other ridesharing services doesn’t lower the risk for everyone on the road. In some cases, ridesharing vehicles like Uber actually raise the risk of crashes.

Here’s a look at Uber risks by the numbers:

  • 2.6 miles. That’s how much extra driving an Uber does compared to someone driving their own vehicle. Uber cars travel further because their drivers need to get to a rider, complete the rider’s trip, and then travel to the next rider. This extra mileage may mean increased traffic congestion and a higher risk of accidents.
  • 1,100 deaths. A 2017 study estimated that ridesharing causes 1,100 extra roadway deaths per year, due to higher traffic congestion.
  • 110 million. That’s how many Uber rides ended with a safety complaint to Uber in 2022, according to the company’s 2021-2022 safety report.
  • 189 deaths occurred during Uber trips in 2022, including 153 deaths from motor vehicle crashes and 36 deaths from physical assault.
  • 2,717 sexual assault incidents occurred in Ubers in 2022, according to the company’s safety report.

Uber argues that its rides are substantially safer than driving on the road as a whole. Yet the increased presence of Uber vehicles on New Jersey roadways raises the risk for everyone who uses the road – not just those who drive for or ride with Uber.

Uber’s Requirements for Drivers in New Jersey

Uber does not provide specialized training for its drivers, despite the fact that Uber drivers perform a service similar to that of professional cab drivers. Uber’s basic requirements for New Jersey drivers focus on three main qualifications:

  • Age and experience: New Jersey Uber drivers must be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of three years of driving experience.
  • Insurance: All Uber drivers must have current vehicle insurance in the state where they plan to drive. Insurance must meet the state’s minimum requirements.
  • Background check: Before driving with Uber, a driver must pass the company’s mandated background check.

Uber checks these credentials before clearing someone to drive with the company. However, Uber doesn’t provide additional oversight once a driver starts accepting Uber rides. Uber does not perform ongoing background checks.

What to Expect in an Uber Accident Lawsuit

Uber accident claims can be tougher to navigate than ordinary car accident claims. That’s because Uber, as a company, is often involved, as well as those who were present in the crash.

While Uber does offer insurance coverage for drivers and riders, understanding how that coverage applies can be tough. Different amounts and types of coverage apply to different situations. For instance, coverage available when a rider is in the vehicle may be absent when a driver is simply waiting to accept a ride request.

Navigating insurance claims is difficult. Gathering evidence and piecing together what happened after a crash can be even tougher. An experienced Uber crash attorney in Union Center, New Jersey can help.
